NESA provides a list of verbs or “action words” for each subject or course in the HSC program. These verbs are used to define the learning outcomes and expectations for students and to help teachers to plan and design assessments that accurately measure student learning.

Examples of NESA verbs for HSC subjects may include:

  • Analyse
  • Evaluate
  • Investigate
  • Construct
  • Synthesize
  • Justify
  • Compare
  • Describe
  • Explain
  • Apply

These verbs help to provide clear and specific guidance to students about what they are expected to do in order to demonstrate their understanding of a particular concept or skill.
