- FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A CAREER PATH
- What sort of thinker am I?
- What values and ambitions do I have?
- What encourages/motivates me to give off my best?
- Am I a person who follows my passion for things or am I driven by material gain?
- What are the things that are important to me as a person?
- During the GET …what subject preferences did/do I have?
- Which subjects do I have a “natural liking for”? Don’t be restricted to subjects you are familiar with in grade 9
- Enquire about “new subjects”
- Talk to people who are currently doing the job you want to?
Ask them:
What subjects they had to study? What degree/diploma they had to study for?
What sort of demands their jobs place on them? What they like or dislike about their careers.
- Examine job advertisements from newspapers/internet etc.
- Check if there are many openings for the career you intend to pursue.
- My Aptitude….
Do I have natural talent of the field/subjects I want to choose?
Am I good at these subjects?
What are my strengths?
- In terms of my scholastic performance …where do my strengths lie?
- Avoid subjects that you are struggling with … (especially if you are not committed to working hard at them).
- Examine your academic ability.
- If you want to choose subjects in the Accounting; Info Tech and Physical/Health Sciences Field
HOW ARE YOU PERFORMING IN MATHEMATICS and NATURAL SCIENCES?
Other Important Considerations
- Examine ALL the available options
- Do you sincerely like the choice you are about to select?
- How well did you perform in these subjects in the GET phase?
- Are you making this choice because you are pleasing your parents, friends or yourself?
- Did you choose these subjects so that you can be in the same class with your friends?
- Did you choose these subjects due to the status attached to them?
- Will these subjects be of benefit to me?
For Parents to remember
- You do not choose for your child. You are there to assist or guide your child.
- Don’t try and “live your dreams” through your child.
- Don’t see this as an opportunity to elevate your status.
- Don’t see this as an opportunity to compete with your friends, neighbours and relatives. Be realistic.
“A happy child will be an achieving child”
