DIPLOMA in COMMUNICATION STUDIES
The Diploma Programme consists of communication, social sciences and arts subjects and provides an opportunity for students to develop their potential in any of the specialised areas in communication. Specifically, graduates can further their education or work as professionals in areas such as TV, radio, on-line journalism, wire service, newspaper/ magazine journalism, public relations, advertising or marketing.
BACHELOR OF ARTS COMMUNICATION STUDIES
The Degree Programme in Communication Studies offers a concentration of media-focused courses mixed with social science and arts education. It is designed to enable students combine study areas from the social sciences and the arts, with theoretical and practical communication studies.
The programme is organised to give undergraduates a professional choice in either journalism or public relations. Accordingly, all students enrolled in the B.A. Communication Studies degree will pursue one of the following two sequences.
TWO-YEAR B.A.COMMUNICATION STUDIES (TOP-UP)
The Institute also runs a two-year programme starting from level 300. The objective of this programme is to afford the Institute’s past students who hold the Diploma certificate to further their education in Communication Studies.

Applicants must possess passes (A – D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English, Mathematics and three (3) elective subjects with an overall aggregate of 24 or better.
WASSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must possess passes(A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English, Mathematics and three (3) elective subjects with an overall aggregate of 36 or better
GCE ADVANCED LEVEL HOLDERS
Applicants must possess a General Certificate of Examinations (GCE) ‘A’ Level Grade E or better in three (3) subjects, at least, one of which should be Grade D or better Credit passes i.e. Grade 6 or better in five (5) GCE Ordinary Level (‘O” Level) subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science subject, for non-science students.
DIPLOMA HOLDERS
GIJ Diploma holders with a CGPA of 1.79 and below can apply to be admitted to level 200.
MATURE STUDENTS (Who can apply?)
Persons wishing to enter the Ghana Institute of Journalism as Mature Students must be at least 25 years old, and show proof of age with birth certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth which is at least 5 years old at the time of application.
Applicants will be considered for admission on passing a special entrance examination in English Language, Mathematics and Aptitude Test/General Paper to be conducted by the Institute on Saturday, 10th December, 2022.
B. A. IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES
SSSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must possess passes (A – D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English, Mathematics and three (3) elective subjects with an overall aggregate of 24 or better.
WASSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must possess passes(A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English, Mathematics and three (3) elective subjects with an overall aggregate of 36 or better.
DIPLOMA IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES (REGULAR AND WEEKEND SESSIONS)
(Weekend Session – Lectures start from Fridays to Sundays)
SSSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must possess passes (A-D) in five (5) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English, Mathematics and two (2) elective subjects with an overall aggregate of 20 or better.
WASSCE HOLDERS
Applicants must possess passes(A1-C6) in five (5) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English, Mathematics and two (2) elective subjects with an overall aggregate of 30 or better.
MATURE STUDENTS (Who can apply?)
Persons wishing to enter the Ghana Institute of Journalism as Mature Students must not be less than 25 years old.
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum requirements:
- Credit Passes (A1 – C6 in WASSCE and A – D in SSSCE) in five (5) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language and Core Mathematics plus two (2) elective subjects
- Applicants whose qualifications do not meet the requirements for admission as in (i) above may be considered for admission on passing a special entrance examination conducted by the University and an interview. Applicants should note that those who meet the requirements for admission as in (i) above will not be required to take any entrance examination.
NOTE:
Applicants will be selected based on a competitive cut-off point for the year. Candidates awaiting results are eligible to apply.
LEVEL 300 TOP-UP (WEEKEND SESSION)
MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
- GIJ Diploma holders with a minimum Final Grade Point Average of 2.50 or Grade B or an equivalent Diploma from an Accredited Communication Training Institution with an average of Grade B are eligible to apply.
- Diploma holders with Final Grade Point Average of 3.25 from the following disciplines: Archival Studies, Public Administration, Social Administration, Education and Management Studies are eligible to apply.
- Higher National Diploma (HND) holders with a minimum of 2nd Class (Lower Division) in the following: Marketing, Information Technology, Secretaryship and Management Studies as well as Social Science and Humanities related programme not mentioned here are also eligible to apply.
- Degree holders with a minimum of 2nd Class (Lower Division) in the following: Information Studies, Information Technology, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, Social Studies, Theatre Studies, Marketing, Secretaryship, English, and French are eligible to apply.
- Final Year Diploma students are eligible to apply as awaiting results applicants. (Certificates should, however, be provided to complete the application process)
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
International students who hold equivalent qualifications are eligible to apply for any of the programmes.
