Australian teaching standards
The Australian teaching standards are a set of professional standards that outline the knowledge, skills, and practices that are expected of teachers in Australia. These standards are designed to help teachers reflect on their practice, identify areas for improvement, and engage in ongoing professional learning and development.
The standards vary between the states and territories in Australia, with each jurisdiction responsible for developing and implementing its own standards. However, there is some commonality between the standards, with most jurisdictions basing their standards on the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) National Teacher Standards.
The AITSL National Teacher Standards provide a comprehensive framework for teacher professional development and are based on four broad domains:
- Professional knowledge
- Professional practice
- Professional engagement
- Outcomes for students
The National Teacher Standards are intended to serve as a benchmark for teacher quality and to provide a common understanding of what it means to be a high-quality teacher in Australia. They are used by teacher accreditation authorities, schools, and teacher professional associations to inform teacher development programs and support the ongoing improvement of teaching and learning outcomes for students.
