University of Newcastle graduation 2023

Your graduation should be a great day for you and your family, and one that runs as smoothly as possible.

With around 8000 students graduating from the University each year, there are parts of the process that are your responsibility.

So while finishing your coursework and successfully completing your final exams and assessments is the hard part, there are still a few steps you need to take before you graduate.

The University of Newcastle holds graduation ceremonies several times a year to confer degrees to students who have successfully completed their studies.

Location

At University of Newcastle, graduation ceremonies are held at the St Lucia campus in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The ceremonies usually take place in May, July, and December.

Students who have completed their studies and met all the necessary requirements for graduation will receive an Students wear academic gowns and hoods during the ceremony ony, students wear academic gowns and hoods and receive their degree certificate in person.

What happens if I don’t finish before Fully Graded Date?

If you complete your program requirements after the Fully Graded date, your completion will still be actioned, however, you will not be able to attend graduation in December. You will be able to defer your graduation, receive a refund, and then register to attend a ceremony at a later date.

How long does University of Newcastle graduation ceremony take?

approximately 90 minutes

Each graduation ceremony lasts approximately 90 minutes and follows a set process: 1. The graduand procession enters the hall (in strict order) approximately 15 to 20 minutes before the official start of the ceremony.

University of Newcastle graduation 2023 tickets

A personalised invitation will be sent to your nominated email address six weeks prior to your ceremony. We do not send invitations by mail.

Check that the invitation shows your name and qualification details correctly. If your name is incorrect you will need to submit a Change of Details form by the date provided in your graduation invitation.

You then log into the the online registration system to let us know by the closing date whether you wish to attend, not attend or defer (which you can do for up to one year).

Registration to attend is complete once payment for your graduation package has been processed and you will receive a receipt by email. If you do not receive a receipt at the time of registration please email us at graduation@newcastle.edu.au.

Late registration

If you decide to attend after the closing date has passed, you need to apply to graduation@newcastle.edu.au, providing evidence of any hardships that prevented you from registering on time, or of having made significant travel arrangements prior to the cut-off date.

If your late registration application is approved, there may be an additional processing fee of $100.

Venues and transport

Your invitation to graduate will be sent to your preferred email address six weeks before your ceremony.

So make sure you check myHub to ensure that all your contact details – i.e. home and mailing addresses, phone numbers and email addresses – are up to date.

Double check that your mobile phone number is correct, as we will be sending you an SMS when registration for graduation opens. If you don’t have a mobile phone provide us with an alternative email as a backup.

If you would prefer your name to be printed in an alternate order on your documents (for example: in Chinese format), contact Graduation.

If you nominated your student email address as your preferred method of communication and can no longer access it, please email graduation@newcastle.edu.au with an alternative email address and mobile number as soon as possible.

Eligibility to graduate

First and foremost, you need to meet all the academic requirements of your degree – i.e. correct courses and number of units – to be eligible to graduate.

It is your responsibility to lodge evidence of completion for all degree requirements with the appropriate person, as well as to ensure that results from cross-institutional or exchange study are received before the final date of registration for your graduation ceremony.

  • You have been awarded your degree.
  • Your major (for applicable undergraduate students) or specialisation (for applicable postgraduate students) is shown correctly.
  • Your level of Honours or Distinction have been added to your record (if applicable).
  • You don’t have any unprocessed credit.
  • Your professional experience, industrial experience, thesis or projects are listed as complete.
  • You don’t have any incomplete grades, outstanding review of grades, supplementary assessments or deferred exams. Please note, if you accept an offer of a supplementary exam you are not guaranteed to meet the registration deadlines for your graduation ceremony.
  • You don’t have any outstanding debts to the University.
  • If you have any debts owing, you can still attend your graduation ceremony, but you won’t be able to receive your graduation documents.
