How to apply for Internships in Cape Town

To apply for internships in Cape Town, you must submit an application form to the relevant organization. Depending on the organization and the internship, you may need to provide personal information, educational qualifications, work experience, and other relevant information. You may also need to provide a copy of your passport or other form of identification. Once you have submitted your application form, you will need to wait for it to be processed.

  1. Apply for a graduate internship

The City offers various training and skills development opportunities for graduates between the age of 18 – 35.

Graduate Internship Programme

If you are a graduate student who has completed your qualification at a University of Technology, please apply. You will need to be in possession of a national diploma or degree. The programme may part time or full time.

PLEASE NOTE

To qualify for a graduate internship, you must be in possession of a bachelor’s degree or postgraduate qualification.

Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG)

This programme is specifically aimed at engineering and science graduates. It exposes you to various science and engineering fields, and ensures you are registered, or eligible for registration as Professional Natural Scientists, Professional Engineers, Technologists or Technicians.

You need to be in possession of either a BSc Eng; BSc Hons; MTec;, MSc; PhD; BTech; M.Eng qualification in either of the following:

  • Civil/Chemical/Mechanical/Electrical or Industrial Engineering
  • Planning
  • Environmental Science
  • Materials Science
  • Microbiology
  • Biotechnology
  • Virology
  • Chemical Science
  • Chemistry
  • Atmospheric Science
  • Hydrogeology
  • Geochemistry
  • Hydrology
This programme has a quarterly intake of graduates during the financial year.
The internship forms part of the Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG), which is aimed at enabling registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) in selected fields of study.

Skills Programme

This programme is aimed at those in possession of Grade 9/10/11 or a National Senior Certificate. It gives you practical exposure and aims to provide structured practical learning opportunities.
The Skills Programme has a quarterly intake of candidate throughout the year.

Work Integrated Learning

This programme is aimed at those in possession of a National Certificate – N6. This in-service training integrates academic learning with practical experience in the workplace. This work experience has clear learning outcomes and is a specific requirement to obtain a formal qualification.
This programme has a quarterly intake of candidates during the financial year.

  1. Apply for the Urban Sustainability Internship Programme

We offer full-time graduate internships in specific fields related to urban sustainability.

About the internship

The internship provides an exciting opportunity for you to develop skills in key operational areas in the City and gain practical experience in your field.

As an intern you will be mentored by a manager within the relevant City department, and will have the opportunity to attend compulsory training workshops and interventions when necessary.

We offer a minimum stipend of R49,08 per hour, based on a 40-hour (5-day) week, as well as limited employment benefits such as paid annual leave, sick leave and training.

Positions

As an intern, you will work in one of the following sections/branches:

  • Urban design, spatial planning, development implementation, architecture or landscape architecture – Urban Planning and Design Department
  • Strategic policy, organisational research, research analytics, economic analysis (Policy and Strategy Department)
PLEASE NOTE

If shortlisted, you will need to attend assessments and interviews, and you must be able to start work on Monday, 3 February 2023.

Requirements

Applicants are required to be recent graduates of a tertiary institution, with a recognised degree or national diploma in a related field. Specific qualifications will be listed in the advertised post.

You are also required to have the following:

  • A valid driver’s licence for selected posts
  • Good planning, administration, writing, analytical and oral communication skills
  • Literacy in computers, especially the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • The ability to work independently, within a team and under pressure
You must not be enrolled for further studies that coincide with the internship period.
PLEASE NOTE

Preference will be given to graduates from universities, technical universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in the Western Cape.
